Following its debut in New York City, the 1993 Whitney Biennial traveled to the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, South Korea, marking the only time the exhibition was exported internationally.
On the occasion of the Korean installment, the Korean friends of the 1993 Whitney Biennial produced a benefit portfolio of artists that included Byron Kim, Merce Cunningham, Nam June Paik, Lorna Simpson, among others.
Kim used different shades of celadon green in his monochrome paintings that reference the glazes of Korean Koryŏ Dynasty (918-1392 CE) ceramics.
