Ai Weiwei lived in an apartment in New York’s East Village from 1983 to 1993. During that time, he took over 10,000 photographs documenting his life as an artist and his artistic community. Photographs include scenes from New York City, social gatherings, self-portraits, and his social circle which included Allen Ginsberg, Chen Kaige, Tan Dun, Tehching Hsieh, Xu Bing, Liu Xiaodong, Yu Hong, Wang Keping, Yao Qingzhang, Gu Changwei, among others.
