Arlan Huang is an abstract painter known for large-scale works inspired by the world around him. Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love depicts Philip Ahn and Anna May Wong from the 1937 American crime film, Daughter of Shanghai.
Daughter of Shanghai, which was directed by Robert Florey, stared Ahn and Wong at a time when Asian American actors were not included in Hollywood. The film, which was well-regarded as a successful B-movie, was notable for its Asian-focused theme and for featuring two prominent Asian-American performers as leads. Anna May Wong passed in 1961 but remained an icon as one of the first Asian American actors to reach international acclaim. The celebratory Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love, complete with pink hearts, can be read as a stance against racism in Hollywood.
