Imagining Identity, 2023
Digital Photography, 36 x 84 in.

Imagining Identity portrays a surreal visualization of the construction of my identity as a human being--built on the basis of hope to love, protect and enhance the environments we inhabit as we do with ourselves. The photograph highlights vibrant colors influenced by Andean textiles tones and traditional clothing. I aim to present a modern perspective of indigenous art through a pop art approach. The art practice and process form part of constructing my identity--creating imperfections and distortions that add uniqueness to my art style and individual identity.

Photograph of a person with light-colored skin and dark hair pulled back, wearing a pink blazer and tan shirt with two gold necklaces, sitting in a room filled with art supplies
Photograph of Darinka Arones, courtsey of the artist.

Darinka Arones is a visual artist currently pursuing a BFA degree in Studio Art. She was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and migrated to the US at the age of 14. As a Peruvian immigrant and artist, Darinka is significantly interested in showcasing artworks that portray her emotional process of adaptation to the US. In her art, she uses saturated colors to create and highlight the surreal sensations that migrating had on her inner self: homesickness, anxiety, melancholy, and grief. Darinka enjoys developing mixed media pieces that exhibit her cultural identity, soul, and personality.
