Fungal (2022)
Glazed Ceramic 2” x 3” x 4” 2022

Fungal was inspired by the mythology of a fungus that occupies the human body and grows their own consciousness. I combined the features of mushroom and female torso to express the delicate and vulnerable relationship between human and nature.

Drifts (2022)
Mixed Textile 32” x 28”

Drifts is a mixed media textile piece representing my status of meandering. I often find myself detached from reality thinking about the far future or the intangible unknowns, and the jellyfish is a symbol of such purposeless wonder. Through the repetitive and meditative process of crochet and sewing, I found peace and self recognition in the process of making.

Yuxi Ma (she/her)

Growing up with parents’ support, Yuxi Ma playfully explored visual art as an interest in childhood and started art learning in the 10th grade from the IB curriculum. Currently studying at NYU Steinhardt Studio Program, Yuxi is pursuing her art journey in New York as an undergraduate freshman. She is interested in making through various 3D mediums including ceramic, textiles, wood, glass, to construct a tangible experience in her work.

Artist Statement

Feeling anxiety and confusion trying to discover my identity and meaning, I find the world of art a meditative space to introspect and be in the present moment. After arriving in New York City, I explored various new mediums and dived into soft and touchy media such as textile and ceramic to create tangible artworks. Creating art to me is a practice of vulnerability. By exploring my identity and cultural connection in my work, I was able to embrace the uncertainty in both art creation and life and look forwards to the possibilities.
