Sitting in the Tall Grass, Soaking up its Spirit (2022)
Oil on canvas 49” x 48”

Sitting in the Tall Grass, Soaking up its Spirit explores a queer body at rest, in solitude, a scene not often portrayed. Modifications to the body, such as the tattoo that runs down the subject’s back which mirrors the grass of the field in which he sits, have become intrinsic to the queer youth identity, and are important markers of queerness that transcends history. Modifying the body whether through piercing or tattooing or some other method, becomes an act of resistance within spaces and hierarchies that are constructed for heteronormativity. Through the use of vibrant colors, intricate details, and layered textures, Nick aims to capture the complexity and diversity of queer experiences, while also inviting viewers to question their own preconceived notions of gender and sexuality.

Artist Statement

Working Predominantly in figurative oil painting, he uses plains of colors and broad brush strokes to depict queer bodies, intimacy, and expression, with a particular focus on practices of body modification as a means of asserting bodily autonomy, and as acts of self creation. Nick is interested in the lack of representation within art historical narratives of intimacy outside of the predominant heteronormative fields. He works within his practice to provide an honest representation of his community in repose.
