Los interrogativos (Question Words)
(See alt text in this document)
Interrogativos are words used to ask questions. They help gather information about things, people, places, time, manner, reasons, quantity, and more. In Spanish, question words always carry a tilde/acento (´) when used in questions and are enclosed with both an opening ¿and a closing? question mark.
- ¿Qué?
- What?
- ¿Cuál? / ¿Cuáles?
- Which?
- ¿Quién? / ¿Quiénes?
- Who?
- ¿Cómo?
- How?
- ¿Cuándo?
- When?
- ¿Dónde?
- Where?
- ¿Adónde?
- Where to?
- ¿De dónde?
- From where?
- ¿Cuánto? / ¿Cuánta? / ¿Cuántos? / ¿Cuántas?
- How much? / How many?
- ¿Por qué?
- Why?
When forming questions in Spanish, there are several important rules to follow:
1. No Auxiliary Verbs Like “Do” or “Does”
In Spanish, questions do not require auxiliary verbs like do or does. The subject and verb order are often enough to indicate a question.
Example:
- ¿Hablas español? 🌎
- Do you speak Spanish?
2. Subject Placement is Flexible
In yes/no questions, the subject can come before or after the verb, but it often appears after the verb for a more natural question structure.
Examples:
- ¿Tu amigo vive aquí? 🏠
- Does your friend live here?
- ¿Vive tu amigo aquí? 🏠
- Does your friend live here?
3. Intonation Can Also Indicate a Question
In spoken Spanish, a statement can become a question just by raising the intonation at the end. However, when writing, you still need ¿?.
Example:
- ¿Tienes hambre? 🤤 🍕
- Are you hungry?
4. "Por qué" vs. "Porque"
- Por qué (with a space and accent mark means "why" (question).
- Porque (no accent, one word) means "because" (answer).
Example:
- ¿Por qué estudias español? 🌎
- Why do you study Spanish?
- Porque me gusta. ❤️
- Because I like it.
5. Rules for Using Prepositions in Questions
The preposition always stays at the beginning of the question.
- Correct: ¿Con quién hablas?
- With whom do you speak?
- Incorrect: ❌ ¿Quién hablas con?
