In collaboration with British designer Samuel Ross and his studio SR_A, Kohler introduced Formation 02, a sculptural smart toilet that premiered at Milan Design Week 2024. Ross draws upon brutalist architecture and the force of water as inspiration to transform a utilitarian toilet into an angular seating form made in industrial "Haptic Orange" color. Built on Kohler’s smart toilet platform, the piece combines cutting-edge technology with an aesthetic that reflects Ross’s vision of “social architecture for the body.”
Founded in 1873, Kohler has played an important role in shaping American industrial design. The company has a long-standing history of collaborating with artists and designers, dating back to the establishment of its Arts/Industry residency program in 1974, which invites artists to work directly within its industrial pottery and foundry facilities in Wisconsin.
