Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They provide additional information about how, when, where, or how often an action occurs. In this section, we will focus on adverbios de tiempoΒ (adverbs of time) and adverbios de frecuenciaΒ (adverbs of frequency).
Adverbios de tiempo
The following adverbs indicate whenΒ an action happens:
- ahora
- now
- antes de
- before
- despuΓ©s de
- after
- luego
- then, after
- ya
- already
- todavΓa
- yet, still
- ayer
- yesterday
- hoy
- today
- maΓ±ana
- tomorrow
The adverbs above can be placed before or after the verb:
- MaΓ±anaΒ es mi cumpleaΓ±os. π
- Tomorrow is my birthday.
- Mi cumpleaΓ±os es maΓ±ana. π
- My birthday is tomorrow.
Note on antes deΒ and despuΓ©s de:
When these adverbial phrases are followed by a verb, the infinitive (base form) is used:
- DespuΓ©s deΒ comer, siempre lavo los platos. π½οΈ π§½
- After eating, I always wash the dishes.
- TΓΊ te cepillas los dientes antes deΒ desayunar.Β πͺ₯π¦·
- You brush your teeth before having breakfast.
Adverbios de frecuencia
These adverbs indicate how oftenΒ an action happens:
- siempre
- always
- casi siempre
- almost always
- a menudo
- often
- con frecuencia
- frequently
- a veces
- sometimes
- casi nunca
- hardly ever
- nunca
- never
Here are some examples in context:
- Casi nuncaΒ como comida rΓ‘pida, pero a vecesΒ como McDonald 's. π
- I hardly ever eat fast food but sometimes I eat McDonaldβs.
- Elle va al supermercado a menudo. ππ
- They go to the supermarket often.
Notes on word order:
- SiempreΒ and nuncaΒ usually go before the verb:
- SiempreΒ estudio espaΓ±ol. ππ€
- I always study Spanish.
- NuncaΒ como carne. π π₯©
- I never eat meat.
- With negative sentences, nunca can go beforeΒ or afterΒ the verb, but when it follows the verb, no is required:
- NoΒ como carne nunca. βπ₯©
- I never eat meat.
- Other frequency adverbsΒ (a veces, a menudo,Β etc.) can appear at the beginning or endΒ of the sentence:
- A vecesΒ voy al restaurante. π€·
- Sometimes I go to the restaurant.
- Voy al restaurante a veces. π€·
- I go to the restaurant sometimes.
