As you have learned with estar, in Spanish some verbs are irregular only in the first-person singular (yo form) of the present tense because they undergo spelling changes or stem modifications, even if they follow regular patterns in other forms. These irregularities occur for phonetic reasons or due to historical linguistic changes.

Types of Irregularities in the "yo" Form

• -go

Some verbs add -go in the yo form:

• hacer → hago

• I do/make

• poner → pongo

• I put

• salir → salgo

• I leave

• tener → tengo

• I have

• venir → vengo

• I come

• decir → digo

• I say

• -zco

Verbs ending in -cer or -cir (with a vowel before -cer/-cir) often change -c- to -zc- in the yo form:

• conocer → conozco

• I know

• parecer → parezco

• I seem

• conducir → conduzco

• I drive

• traducir → traduzco

• I translate

• Completely Irregular Verbs

A few verbs have unique irregular yo forms that don't fit the above patterns:

• ser → soy

• I am

• estar → estoy

• I am

• dar → doy 

• I give

• ir → voy

• I go

• saber → sé

• I know

• ver → veo

• I see

Remember: these irregularities only affect the yo form; the rest of the conjugations in the present tense usually follow regular patterns. For example:

Hacer (to do/make)

Here are some more examples in context:

• Yo hago la tarea en la biblioteca, pero tú haces la tarea en casa.

• I do my homework in the library, but you do your homework at home.

• Siempre salgo con mis amigues los fines de semana.

• I always go out with my friends on the weekends.

• Voy a clase todos los días.

• I go to class every day.
