Did you have to read The House on Mango Street when you were in high school?

Published in 1984, The House on Mango Street is a novel by Chicana writer Sandra Cisneros. Told through a series of short, poetic vignettes, it follows the life of Esperanza Cordero, a 12-year-old Chicana girl growing up in a Latino neighborhood of Chicago. Inspired in part by Cisneros’s own upbringing, the story captures a year in Esperanza’s life as she navigates the challenges of adolescence within a community marked by poverty and traditional gender roles. The book explores themes such as Mexican/U.S.-American identity, social class, race, gender, and sexuality.

Widely regarded as a modern classic of Chicano literature, the novel has sparked extensive scholarly discussion in the fields of Chicano studies and feminist theory. With over 6 million copies sold and translations in more than 20 languages, it is a staple in school and university reading lists across the U.S.
