1.3 El alfabeto
1. ¿Cómo se escribe…? Find two people in class with whom you haven’t had a conversation or haven’t had a chance to speak to too much. Briefly introduce yourself and ask them to spell their name and last name, you must write down what you hear without them seeing and vice-versa. In the end, let’s compare and see if we got everyone’s name correctly spelled. Be prepared to share your spelling with the class.

1. ¿Quién eres? Each student will receive a card with a “false identity.” You will find in these cards:
- Un nombre (name)
- Pronombre preferido (preferred pronouns)
- Una nacionalidad (nationality)
- Un rol en la universidad (a role at the university)
- Edad (age)
- Un objeto que hay en su mochila (an object in their backpack)
You must walk around the classroom, greeting each other with your new identities and exchanging information. Make sure you are not looking at the other person’s card! Use expressions like:
- Hola, ¿cómo te llamas?
- ¿Tiene un pronombre preferido?
- ¿De dónde eres?
- ¿Eres estudiante o profesor/a?
- ¿Qué hay en tu mochila?

After speaking with two or three classmates, each student will present one or two of these people they’ve “met”, using complete sentences, subject pronouns, etc. For example:

3. ¡Adivina quién! Let’s play a game similar to Guess Who! with the following people. You will each have a “board” with all of the people in the deck and your instructor will give each pair a person at random. Ask yes or no questions in order to figure out who your partner is. Whoever guesses first, wins!

4. ¡A observar! Look at the following images and with a partner determine how many people there are in the picture, and who or what you believe they are like. Write simple sentences using the subject pronouns and the verb ser to describe each image. Use different subject pronouns (yo, tú, él, ella, elle, nosotras/os/es, vosotras/os/es, ellas/os/es, ustedes) and do not use each pronoun more than twice.

1. ¡BINGO! Your instructor will give you a bingo card with a number of classroom items. You must write the correct definite article (el, la, los, las) for each noun. Then, listen attentively as the instructor describes certain items, you must circle the item that they are talking about. First student to complete a row, column, or diagonal shouts ¡Bingo!

2. Clasificar sustantivos. Work in pairs to correctly classify singular and plural nouns with the correct definite articles (el, la, los, las). You will each get a set of noun cards with classroom related words in singular and plural form, along with a “sorting paper” divided into the four article categories.
STEPS:
- Shuffle the noun cards and place them in a stack face down.
- Take turns picking a card.
- Read the noun aloud and decide together which category it belongs to (el, la, los, or las).
- Place the card in the correct section of your sorting paper.
- Once all the cards are placed, review them together and be prepared to share your answers with the class during discussion.
BONUS CHALLENGE: After sorting, choose three nouns and make a complete sentence with each one (e.g. En la clase hay doce mochilas.)
3. Matemáticas. Let’s solve the following mathematical equations using complete sentences. Notice that there will be a noun in parenthesis indicating what the emoji is but in your answer you must include the noun in agreement with the number.

1.7 Características físicas y de personalidad
1. A circular! Go around the classroom and find at least three (3) different classmates to answer the following questions.

1. Inventario. Create a “secret inventory” of objects in your backpack, you must write about least five (5) things that you have and at least one (1) thing that you do not have, using haber and the numbers. Then, in pairs, take turns guessing each other’s inventory by asking questions and responding in complete sentences. You each earn a point for each correct guess.

1. Buscando a un amigo/a/e. Think of 5 activities that you enjoy doing (using regular –ar verbs) and 3 activities that you do not enjoy doing, write them down. Next, interview a classmate to find out whether they do or enjoy the activities that you have chosen for yourself, they will ask you in turn if you enjoy the activities that they have chosen as well. Decide whether the two of you are compatible as friends based on the activities you enjoy doing.
2. Mi vida. Walk around the classroom and interview as many classmates as you can with the following questions. NOTICE that the verbs have not been conjugated, make sure to conjugate appropriately! Additionally, make sure to have a conversation beyond simple yes or no answers, ask for details. Write down who does or does not do these things so that you can share your findings with the class.
