Hyperfixation nº1 (2023)

Dyllan Gabriel (Larmond)

11.5” x 11.5”

Oil on MDF

Hyperfixation Nº1 is a celebration of the beauty and allure of an object. The necklace depicted was crafted by Los Angeles-based jeweler Kimberly Senzaki-Whalen, known as @weird_bits on Instagram. Her work features precious gemstones, freshwater pearls, ribbons, and bold hardware in bespoke designs. This painting serves as both a technical study and a tribute to a fleeting moment of yearning for a beautiful, unattainable object.

Alt-Text:

A vibrant oil painting on MDF featuring a necklace adorned with irregular pearls and gemstone charms, including hearts and sparkles. The necklace appears suspended against a teal background with painterly textures, framed by a pink border that contrasts the cool tones. The artwork blends realism with abstraction, emphasizing the intricate details of the jewelry and the expressive brushwork in the background.

Dyllan Gabriel (Larmond) is a New York City-based multidisciplinary artist. His artistic practice, rooted in painting and drawing, is a brightly colored exploration of identity and objecthood through the lens of queerness, turning a desiring gaze on people, objects, spaces, sounds, and cherished memories. His work delves into interpersonal connections, questioning the fine line between the personal and the parasocial and what it means to be seen, amplified, and adored under the queer gaze.

In 2022, Gabriel was a featured artist for Spotify’s Culture Next Report, debuting at the Cannes Lions Festival. His work has been featured internationally, both digitally and in print.

Dyllan is currently pursuing a BFA in Studio Art at New York University while working as a gallery assistant for Ortega y Gasset Projects and as an intern and studio assistant for Fire Island Artist Residency.

Artist Statement

In my search for connection with the world around me, I’ve found comfort in the small details that anchor me in my experiences. These details range from casual still life compositions hidden in everyday scenes to quiet rays of light falling on unexpected corners. My process often begins with analog photography, capturing moments, objects, and people that I later reinterpret in my artistic practice.

In Hyperfixation Nº1, the subject was inspired by an encounter with jewelry created by Los Angeles-based artist Kimberly Senzaki-Whalen, known as @weird_bits on Instagram. Through painting, I render the subject with care, savoring and processing the intricate details that make it so alluring. This work seeks to pause and pay homage to the overlooked moments and objects that shape our world, inviting reflection and appreciation of the beauty in the everyday.
