The samizdat (from Russian сам/‘sam’ – self, издат/‘izdat’ – abbr. publishing house) was a form of self-published activity proliferated in the Soviet republics during the post-Stalin era and prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Though this clandestine medium existed throughout the Soviet republics, little scholarly work has been done on samizdat in Latvia. Typewriter Rebels, a project conducted by Olivija Liepa as their MA capstone in Archives and Public History (2024), looks at samizdat readership and distribution practices through the lens of oral history. The oral history project will be housed at Mutvārdu vēsture Latvijā (Association of Oral History researchers of Latvia), but this project allows for readers to engage with curated samples of the different interviews.
