Public Domain artwork referenced  in this piece:

Dalí, Salvador. Visage du Grand Masturbateur (Face of the Great Masturbator). 1929.
Oil on canvas, 110 x 150 cm,
Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid.

Artist Statement

A surreal, body-horror adjacent adaptation of The Great Masturbator. Dalí's conflicted emotions on the topic of sex due to inappropriate childhood exposure is adapted into a disgusted viewpoint of how modern day people treat anime-styled girls — and by extension, Asian girls — as a mechanism for male-oriented sexual fantasies. The work reflects sexual anxiety from a different standpoint than Dalí's work, but both stem from a place of sexual trauma and subsequent manufactured disgust.

About the Artist: Andrea Chen

Alum, Tisch School of the Arts ’25

Andrea is a narrative, visual, and game designer. They enjoy surrealism and character focused works. When they were young, they started writing stories during class time after getting in trouble for drawing. She strives to bring the intangibility of experience into tangible mediums. Andrea graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2025.
