INSTRUCTOR GUIDE

EspaNYol has been designed to support students at the introductory Spanish level as established by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL, USA) proficiency guidelines.

This introductory Spanish course is grounded in a learner-centered philosophy that combines a flipped classroom model with a communicative approach to language teaching. Students engage with core content, such as vocabulary, grammar explanations, and cultural materials, outside of class through videos, readings, and interactive activities, freeing class time for meaningful language use. Instructors facilitate dynamic, student-centered sessions focused on communication, collaboration, and problem-solving through pair and group work, role-plays, and task-based activities. The goal is to create a low-anxiety, inclusive environment in which students actively construct knowledge, develop confidence, and use Spanish as a tool for real-world communication rather than solely as an object of study.

The book is structured into several sections, with grammar and vocabulary topics at the core of each unit. Besides these, other sections such as readings and audiovisual materials will be assigned to expand student’s knowledge and acquaintance with the language and different cultures. In addition, notes on cultural topics, lexical variety, and pronunciation, have been included in each chapter. Lastly, instructors will incorporate the in-class activities section into each lesson in order to promote students’ immersion in the language as encountered in everyday use.
